As a 27 year old, single Orthodox woman living on the Upper West Side, dating is a huge part of my life. When people talk about the Shidduch crisis, they are talking about a lack of men, and an abundance of women. But I am convinced that the endless talk about the crisis hurts women — a lot. It can be a self-fulfilling prophecy, too. We put such a strong emphasis on dating in our community. And I get it. But our community has to do better — and it starts with us singles. So how do we reframe our thinking?

Whether you like the term or not, the Shidduch Crisis is arguably the most painful and sensitive issue that the frum community is grappling with today. Mordy Mehlman, publisher of the Flatbush Jewish Journal, opened the program and served as emcee. He explained that the mission of Compass is simple and straightforward: to work towards solving the shidduch crisis by educating and supporting all the stakeholders in the shidduch process, including daters, parents, shadchanim, and coaches.

Community initiatives have been formed to run educational programs, bring in high-profile shadchanim, and organize evenings dedicated to chizuk and tefillah. And according to the numbers, it looks like these initiatives are paying off. It was a nonprofit organization named Kol Simcha, whose primary objective was to raise awareness and get out the word that a problem existed, and that something needed to be done about it.
Shortly thereafter, Kol Simcha hired a salaried shadchan who succeeded in making two dozen Baltimore shidduchim in less than three years, and became an important resource to the community for all shidduch-related matters. But as the community broadened, and as that particular shadchan moved on to a different line of work, the organization needed to innovate and find another way to support its singles.
With the help of a staff of volunteers, the organization spent a few years organizing multiple events that connected hundreds of singles of various ages with scores of shadchanim. And a year or so later, together with NASI, they began offering financial incentives to anyone who set up a date for single women living in Baltimore. The young women were exposed to a broader dating pool, they felt supported emotionally, and had the satisfaction of feeling like they were moving forward with a community that truly cared for them.
A review of the data after a few years of single women adhering to this model, however, revealed several key challenges.

Israel — A few months after Chanaya Weissman — an Orthodox rabbi from New York — had moved to Jerusalem, an American-born couple offered to set him up with a young woman. Yearning to find a spouse but wary of traditional matchmaking in the Orthodox community, the year-old reluctantly agreed to meet the girl. Then he learned the girl had set some preconditions for the date. The Orthodox community — both here and abroad — is full of men and women who set up artificial borders in the name of religious piety, he explained.
Weissman has been concerned about the dating and courting habits of Orthodox Jews long before he started dating himself. What started as an informational Web site has grown to a decent-sized movement organizing lectures about dating and events for singles to mix and meet. While Weissman sees himself as an educator and not a matchmaker, he says he knows of at least 20 couples who got married after meeting at his events.
The Art of the Date
Matchmakers access members’ profiles to find and suggest potential matches, and members can also search the data base to see limited information about members, excluding photos, names, and contact details. Tens of thousands of Jewish singles and marrieds alike have done so through Rebbetzen Esther Jungreis’ Hineini organization. Many married couples first met each other at a Hineni class or social gathering for singles.
Hineni also offers matchmaking services. Each year, Inbar celebrates a number of weddings for men and women who have met thanks to its services. The site employs many features, including private mailboxes, so users can communicate safely until they choose to share personal information.

The objects of their attentions are sitting restlessly in the lobby, periodically getting up to pace the floor. One by one pairs form. Both hope that the person sitting across from them just might be the one. Tourists sharing the lobby stare openly at the daters.
The ultra-organized world of shidduch dating follows a strict set of practices to guide young people from the time they are deemed of age all the way through to the chuppah, the altar, Jerusalem matchmaker Sarah Dena Katz explained. That could be 18 for women and early 20s for men, although the ages vary according to custom and religiosity. Additionally, especially in Haredi communities, parents take the lead in finding acceptable candidates for their children.

First step towards a dream job: a top-notch resume. Couples are set up by matchmakers — professional or personal — who will often use these resumes to determine compatibility. If this is difficult in many situations, it is much more so when it comes to choosing a spouse. The question is: what is the correct approach when dating? Although marital discord can be attributed to lack of preparation, insufficient effort, or inappropriate expectations, marriages often fail because the couple is simply not a match. To put it bluntly: when we get married we place our future happiness in the hands of our mate.
The way our spouse treats us — through his or her unencumbered free will — will be one of the most critical influences on the quality of our lives.
